Hard work at Introdans

This week has been a hard one. At the same time that we are preparing the upcoming shows of KERSTGALA, we are learning a new piece from Nils Christie for the February program which is called: Le Sacre du Printemps. We are doing many things at the same time, which sometimes can be exhausting.

This week the Spanish choreographer Cayetano Soto came to rehearse at Introdans. He is making us rehearse his piece for KERSTGALA, Fugaz. Although it is pretty short, around 11 minutes, its very though, a lot of technique and lines. In addition, we get the explanations of the choreographer what his piece is about, (otherwise it would not make much sense), so the 'information overload' for this day is complete. I was gonna say, thank God that we have a free weekend before the shows of the KERSTGALA, but not even, at the same time we are still performing the program STERREN&STREPEN. So on saturday a performance, rest on sunday, and back again in the studio on monday to finish our rehearsals for KERSTGALA.

Polish the pieces for KERSTGALA

In 10 days, we will have the premiere of this year's Kerstgala. I always enjoy this programme very much as it is one of the only times that the main company and Introdans Ensemble for Youth share the stage in the same performance. This year it is even more special to me, because it will be my last premiere with Introdans and also my last performances in Schouwburg Arnhem. It will be a very bitter sweet time for me but I am fortunate to be dancing in three lovely pieces, Chairman Dances (Lucinda Childs), In Memoriam (Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui)and Fugaz (Cayetano Soto). On monday I will get the opportunity to work briefly with Sidi Larbi and today Cayetano arrived to polish his piece.

Working with Cayetano is fantastic.He really knows exactly what he wants and he pushes you to your extremes to get the best out of you, all in a pleasant atmosphere. Today we did two rather nervous runs of the piece (both casts) and then he started to polish the girls section in the beginning of the piece. We have to be perfectly together and it is very fast and very technical. We have to move bigger, be heavier and more grounded than we are at the moment while remaining precise and he has made a few slight changes which make it better but which your body has to get used to. It is hard work but so worthwhile. It is always good to work with the choreographer to understand the meaning of pieces and the meaning behind the movements that they have created.

I consider myself very lucky to have been chosen to dance this piece. The music is beautiful, the choreography is beautiful and I love dancing in it. I think the audience will enjoy watching it in this very diverse Kerstgala too.

Repeteren voor KERSTGALA

Buiten sinterklaas en kerst betekent de maand december voor mij, Femke Feddema, ook het KERSTGALA bij Introdans. Ik dans tijdens het KERSTGALA in Chairman Dances van Lucinda Childs en de Introdans premiere Fugaz van Cayetano Soto.

Chairman Dances is geen nieuw stuk voor mij want ik heb het al gedanst in het programma LIJNRECHT(2009). Wat wel spannend is, is dat ik deze keer het duet dans. Eigenlijk is dit de rol van mijn collega Lotje Gores maar zij is net bevallen van een zoon dus neem ik haar plaats in. Alle dansers weten nu de passen en daarom doen we nu ongeveer om de dag een "run" van het stuk. Dit houdt in dat we het stuk helemaal doen in de studio zoals in de voorstelling en krijgen daarna van onze repetitor correcties. Op deze manier onthoudt je lichaam de stijl en de passen beter en het helpt om later op toneel te staan.

Het stuk Fugaz is voor alle dansers nieuw. Tijdens KERSTGALA gaat het in premiere en dat maakt het wel heel spannend! Mikiko Arai is in oktober 2 weken bij ons geweest om het stuk in te studeren. Een paar dagen voor het KERSTGALA komt Cayetano Soto zelf met ons repeteren en zal ons helpen om de laatste puntjes op de i te zetten. Wat voor mij persoonlijk erg leuk was is dat Mikiko 10 jaar geleden zelf danseres bij Introdans was en ik toen net begon als stagiaire. Grappig om elkaar weer tegen te komen en herinneringen op te halen. Ik denk dat ik tot de laatste voorstelling nerveus blijf voor Fugaz omdat het technisch best pittig is en je wilt natuurlijk dat alle passen elke keer goed gaan. Ook voor dit stuk doen we 2 tot 3 keer per week een doorloop om de bewegingen echt in je lichaam te krijgen en om je conditie op peil te houden. Ik denk dat we al wel 20 doorlopen hebben gedaan maar elke keer weer wanneer ik het dans en naar mijn collega's kijk geniet ik.Super mooie muziek, mooi choreografie en vooral dansers die stralen!

Het KERSTGALA komt eraan!

Ieder jaar viert Introdans de kerst met een reeks voorstellingen die gezamenlijk worden gedanst door Introdans en Introdans voor de Jeugd. Dit jaar bevat het feestelijke programma ook een verrassende Introdans premiere. Een vooruitblik!

Wij, Mara en Yulanne en onze danspartners Juan en Maxence zijn inmiddels al drie weken bezig met repeteren voor het ballet 'Passage' van Ton Wiggers. Een pas de deux, oorspronkelijk gemaakt voor de dansers Melanie en Sergei, die het een aantal jaren geleden hebben gedanst. Repetitor Diane Matla heeft met ons de eerste week de video bekeken en het stuk ingestudeerd. Op de video zag het er in eerste instantie vrij makkelijk en rustig uit, maar tijdens het instuderen bleek het toch niet zo eenvoudig te zijn. Qua partnerwerk waren vooral de lifts moeilijk. In het begin is het altijd uitzoeken wat het beste werkt, zodat je als koppel op een lijn zit en het makkelijk voor elkaar maakt. Ook moet je zorgen dat je alles verbindt, zodat het er vloeiend uitziet. Nu in de derde week kunnen we aan de details gaan werken en zorgen dat we het eigen maken, omdat we de choreografie inmiddels goed kennen.
Met nog iets minder dan een maand te gaan, proberen we het zo goed mogelijk te krijgen. Het is een leuke afwisseling tussen de twee programma's door en een leerzame ervaring voor de toekomst. Wij hebben heel veel zin in het KERSTGALA en gaan ervan genieten! We hopen dat het publiek dat ook doet!

Introdans

Op naar de première.

Wow, wat een ongelooflijk inspirerende 2 dagen hebben wij net gehad. De Zweedse choreograaf Mats Ek heeft 2 lange dagen keihard met ons gewerkt voor de première van MIXVANMATS aanstaande zaterdag (9 oktober). Iedereen was ontzettend benieuwd naar hoe deze geniale choreograaf in het echt zou zijn. Je hoorde iedereen erover praten in de kleedkamer en we vroegen ons allen af of hij tevreden zou zijn met onze uitvoering. Woensdagmiddag arriveerde hij en na onszelf te hebben voorgesteld, zijn we direct aan de slag gegaan. Van 13.30 tot 21.30 repeteerden we de stukken die te zijn zien in het programma, På Norrbotten en Parken.

We hebben ontzettend veel informatie gekregen over de verhaallijnen, over je karakter in de stukken, en uiteraard ook heel veel correcties. Hij heeft elke pasje zelf verzonnen dus hij weet ook precies hoe hij het hebben wilt. Het is soms moeilijk om iets te veranderen omdat je het al weken op een andere manier uitvoert. Maar als je hem de stap voor ziet doen, klopt het. Je kunt zien dat het op zijn manier moet en geen enkele andere manier zal ooit zo goed werken. De dagen waren lang, erg vermoeiend, vol met zweet en blauwe plekken. Maar wow, wat hebben we veel geleerd en genoten! Deze ervaring zullen we nooit vergeten. Dit was absoluut één van mijn hoogtepunten tot nu toe in mijn danscarrière. Maar ook zonder hem gaan we morgen weer door. Morgen hebben we weer een lange dag voor de boeg. De assistent van Mats Ek blijft nog tot aan de première en dus zijn er weer volop repetities. Met als afsluiter van de avond, de Generale repetitie. Dat betekent de allerlaatste repetitie voor de première. Deze doorloop wordt gedanst alsof het een echte voorstelling is. Ook zal er al wat publiek aanwezig zijn, dat geeft voor ons een extra 'voorstelling' gevoel. De kostuums, de lichten, make- up en haar, alles wordt gedaan zoals een echte voorstelling eruit zal zien. Je kunt het zien als een soort try-out. Iedereen krijgt dan vaak last van de eerste zenuwen, zal het publiek het waarderen? Ik ben benieuwd!

MIXVANMATS gaat in première op 9 oktober, 19.30 in Schouwburg Arnhem. Ook op zondag 10 oktober is er een voorstelling om 14.30 uur. Wij zouden het ontzettend leuk vinden als jullie komen kijken. We beloven jullie een fantastische avond!

Mats Ek is in aantocht

Het is nu dinsdagavond en we hebben weer een pittige werkdag gehad. Aanstaande zaterdag hebben we onze première van MIXVANMATS en het begint nu echt dichtbij te komen. Iedereen realiseert zich dat we nog maar een paar dagen hebben en je voelt de gezonde spanning in de studio. Vandaag was de laatste repetitiedag in de studio's van Introdans. Vanaf morgen repeteren we alleen nog maar in de Schouwburg van Arnhem. Dat is altijd iets waar ik ontzettend naar uit kijk, elke keer weer. De grote zaal waarbij je hoopt dat die propvol zit op de première avond, de lichten op je gezicht, de muziek die weerklinkt in elke hoekje van het theater, het maakt het allemaal weer een stuk echter.

Morgen wordt een extra spannende dag voor ons allemaal. Het is niet alleen de eerste dag in het theater, maar ook krijgen we morgen en overmorgen de kans om met de grote meester zelf te werken, Mats Ek! Hij heeft 2 dagen tijd kunnen vinden om naar Nederland af te reizen en met ons te werken. Ik ben ontzettend benieuwd hoe deze briljante choreograaf in het echt is. Het wordt voor mij de eerste keer dat ik met Mats Ek mag werken en heb zeker positieve zenuwen. Morgen werken we van 11uur 's ochtends tot 10 uur 's avonds en elke minuut zal zeker volledig gebruikt worden. Iedereen gaat er vroeg in vanavond om morgen op z'n best te kunnen presteren. We beginnen morgen met een dagelijkse klassieke balletles om goed op te warmen, daarna pakken we de fiets en rijden we naar de schouwburg waar we zullen beginnen met de spacing. Spacen is het 'plaatsen' van een choreografie op een toneel. Waar staan de dansers? Moet er nog licht aangepast worden? Staan de decorstukken op de juiste plaats? In elk theater waar we heen gaan, beginnen we altijd met de spacing. Het is cruciaal voor een voorstelling. Als de dansers niet weten waar ze moeten dansen, wordt het één groot zooitje. Na de spacing doen we een doorloop in kostuum. Mats Ek is nu aanwezig en wil het gehele plaatje zien zodat hij weet wat hij mogelijk wil aanpassen of verbeteren.
Dan begint de repetitie met Mats Ek, hoe dat zal verlopen vertel ik in mijn volgende blog! Ik voorspel dat het een vermoeiende, maar inspirerende dag wordt en eerlijk gezegd kan ik niet wachten tot het morgen is!

De Dansweek is er weer!

Het begin van de dansweek is weer aangebroken en dat is voor mij en mijn collega's altijd extra spannend. Het begin van deze week betekent dat onze première nu echt voor de deur staat. Ik werk als danseres bij Introdans Ensemble voor de Jeugd, een gezelschap gebaseerd in Arnhem, waar ik nu al ruim 3 jaar met heel veel plezier werk. Introdans is een internationaal gezelschap met grote naamsbekendheid over de hele wereld. Wij dansen vaak moderne stukken, maar met een klassieke techniek als basis. Introdans bestaat uit 2 gezelschappen, Introdans en Introdans Ensemble voor de Jeugd. De dansers uit deze beide gezelschappen zijn gelijk in niveau, het enige verschil tussen deze twee heeft met het publiek te maken.

Mijn groep, Introdans voor de Jeugd, is geschikt voor zowel Jong en Oud, volwassenen en kinderen. Onze voorstellingen zijn vaak wat korter in tijdsduur en wat vroeger op de avond/middag dan 'volwassen' voorstellingen. Ook is er vaak veel humor te vinden in onze voorstellingen, rare decorstukken, grappige kostuums, gekke muziek.. Noem het maar op. Elke voorstelling hoor ik kinderen, maar ook vaak vele volwassenen, lachen en reageren! Er is dan geen beter compliment die je op dat moment kan krijgen. Het is een heerlijk gevoel om mensen, zowel jong & oud, te laten genieten en te inspireren tot vele mogelijkheden.

Onze eerste première van seizoen 2010/2011 dansen wij op 9 oktober in de Schouwburg Arnhem. De voorstelling heet MIXVANMATS, een logische naam want wij zullen in deze voorstelling verschillende stukken dansen van de Zweedse choreograaf Mats Ek. Een wereldberoemde choreograaf waarvan iedere danser(es) droomt om ooit z'n stukken te mogen dansen! MixvanMats is voor ons allen een heerlijk programma om te dansen en wij willen het zo perfect mogelijk uitvoeren. Dat zorgt voor vele uren repetities in de studio's met onze repetitor en persoonlijke assistentes van Mats Ek. Deze assistentes hebben jarenlange ervaring met al het repertoire van Mats Ek en Mats Ek zijn stijl, ze zijn Mats Ek's rechterhand. Al weken repeteren wij elke dag, urenlang aan de 2 stukken die wij zullen laten zien in de voorstelling, Pa Norrbotten en Parken. Beide stukken bestaan al een hele poos en aan ons dus de taak om ze nog beter te dansen dan voorheen.

Vandaag hebben wij onze gebruikelijke doorloop van het programma gehad. De week voor de première doen we een soort 'voor' première met alles erop en eraan. Zo kunnen we goed voelen en zien wat er nog nodig is aan repetities en wijzigingen in technische dingen voor de echte première. Wij dansen voor het eerst in de echte kostuums en er zitten talloze mensen op de banken om te zien wat er nog gebeuren moet. De technici zijn aanwezig, voor de laatste aanwijzingen en notities. Er zijn wel 4 kleedsters bij, oplettend kijken ze wat er nog met de kostuums gebeuren moet. Wij, als dansers, doen wat we al wekenlang oefenen. Maar elke dag proberen we weer een stukje dichterbij perfectie te komen. De doorloop is goed gegaan, na afloop lopen de dansers met kostuum problemen direct naar de kleedsters die letterlijk klaar staan met naald en draad. De technici stellen vragen hoe ze de stukken het beste kunnen belichten, de repetitors staan klaar met hun notitieblokken vol correcties. Het kan altijd beter! Maar dat vind ik persoonlijk ook één van de heerlijkste dingen uit het vak, jezelf blijven verbeteren totdat het publiek opspringt en hard voor je klapt, daar doe je het allemaal voor! Dat is alles waard.

END OF SEASON '10 groot succes

Afgelopen vrijdag- en zaterdagavond sloot Introdans het theaterseizoen 2009/10 af met de feestelijke END OF SEASON voorstelling. Op het programma stonden vier balletten, twee van Introdans en twee van Introdans Ensemble voor de Jeugd. Het publiek was laaiend enthousiast en zoals De Gelderlander schreef: "END OF SEASON, de traditionele afsluitng van het seizoen van Introdans, is een zinderend feest met een afgeladen schouwburg en een programma vol hoogtepunten".

Belgische Introdans dansers in Zuid-Afrika

Introdans dansers Laurent Drousie en Lennart Huysentruyt, beiden afkomstig uit Belgie, werden tijdens de afgelopen Zuid-Afrikaanse SP!R!T tournee geinterviewd voor de Belgische media. De Vlaamse journalist Karl Symons maakte de beelden en verwijst op een sympathieke manier naar de verschillen waar onze Zuiderburen mee te maken hebben. Klik hier om het interview te bekijken.

I am here again... I had the pleasure to open the Switzerland weblog, and now I have the pleasure to wite the last comment. It was a great tour, with a lot of nice things and emotions. We had the oppotunity to see nice cities, to experiece the amazing Swiss audience in the theaters and to meet warm people in the streets. Besides that, we had a beautifull swiming pool in one of the hotels we stayed in, with a jacuzzi, sauna and bath steam as well! This really helped to relax our muscels after the performances!

We all enjoyed so much this tour, but I think I also speak on behalf of everyone by saying that we want to go back home now. We definately need rest, doing our things, eat our own food, or just read a book siting on OUR OWN SOFA.

The last day in Zurich we had two performances: one school performance in the morning and another one in the evening. Before the last performance started, we had to fix a few things. We were really tired of the last 10 days of travelling in Switserland and some of the dancers became a little bit sick. That's why some dancers did not feel totally fit, but still had to perform...yeah, we all know "The show must go on". Fortunately, the last performace went well and the audience applauded us enthusiastically.

Tomorrow, we'll travel back to the Netherlands. Thanks to everyone who made the last show possible, as well as the great 13 days in Switserland.

Lang zal ze leven, lang zal ze leven in de Glòriaaa! Ja, ja, vandaag is het Glòria's beurt, die op deze vroege ochtend wakker wordt gemaakt met een lekker ontbijtje op bed. Het is goed te merken dat we nu al een tijdje onderweg zijn, want de oogjes gaan steeds een beetje moeilijker open. Maar de plicht roept: om 08:00 uur banen we ons weer vrolijk een weg door de regen naar het theater. Er wachten daar 1000 (!) enthousiaste kinderen op ons. Wat een kick! Het geeft zo'n super gevoel om voor zo'n grote groep oprecht eerlijk en uitbundig publiek te mogen staan.


Staand op het toneel zijn de reacties luid en duidelijk te horen en blijft er geen twijfel bestaan over wat ze ervan vinden. Introdans is een groot succes hier in Zwitserland! Dat blijkt ook later tijdens het nagesprek, als ze ongeduldig op en neer springen om hun vraag te mogen stellen.
Hoe kunnen jullie al die stapjes onthouden?, Van waar uit Italie kom jij precies?, Waarom spreken jullie zo slecht Duits? Zo schattig :-).
Na de show is het tijd om wat uit te rusten, en te genieten van de voordelen van het mooie hotel hier in Zurich. Een goede keus blijkt, als later de hagel met bakken uit de hemel naar beneden komt.

1 ding is zeker, we komen hier niets te kort, en genieten er met z'n allen met volle teugen van. En wat een voorrecht: een prachtige voorstelling mogen dansen en overenthousiaste reacties van het publiek. Morgen spelen we de laatste twee voorstellingen in het STEPSfestival: een schoolvoorstelling en een avondvoorstelling. Woensdag de terugreis naar Nederland, donderdag vrij en vrijdag...repetities, want zondag spelen we BONTE BENDE in Groningen!

Today it's the eleventh day of the tour and it's almost a free day. This morning we had not to get up early which was great after the party we had last night. The white party was really nice, full of people and the music was good. It was nice to go out together as a group. That's probably one thing I like most of touring; you spend so much time together with you colleagues that it almost feels like a family!

In the afternoon we had to start working. We spend one hour of class and after that one hour of spacing. Luckliy, this was not too hard. After work some dancers and I went to the hotel's infinite pool, jacuzzi and steam-bath to recover; quite a healty refreshing! Today it's the birthday of dancer Joan and in a few days it's Gloria's. So we decided to have a dinner somewhere. We went to a nice italian restaurant with almost everybody, had lots of fun and the food was great! Now it's time to sleep cause tomorrow the show starts at 10.00 a.m!

Schedule day 10 | Dancers: Day off in Zurich | Technicians: Travel to Zurich

Goodmorning!! Day 10 of the dance festival STEPS. Since the beginning of this tour we were having grey clouds above our heads. Today.. not! The sun is shining, hoera!! Switzerland is beautiful, and with a littlebit of sun everything just seems happyer and brighter. This is my fourth time with Introdans in Switzerland and I love it, even though we go from city to city, change hotels and theatres all the time the travelling always relaxes me. Seeing the mountains and Swiss life pass by, listening to my music, I feel really happy. Plus today is a free day!

Normally, I'm really active, planning in advance the buildings, museums or shops I want to visit, but today, also because I've seen Zurich, I decided to take advantage of all the luxery the hotel had to offer. Great breakfast, sauna, swimmingpool, steambath, jaccuzi and reading my book. At 7pm we all met in the lobby to go to see the performance of Diversions, a company from Wales. The festival offers us free tickets which is great. After that we spend some time in the hotel room getting ready for the White Party. I think the biggest party in the history of Karin going out :-)

We are all really excited, lots of friends and other dancers will be there too so it will be great! Tomorrow we start later in the day and we don't have a performance, so we are allowed to have a partynight! All in all this has been a great trip so far. Enjoying the country, stages and the response of the young and adult audience. So who knows a 5th time!?!

Today was a long long day. Everything started at seven o'clock in the morning when all our alarms rang. We had a really nice, big and energetic breakfast, just before for our first show that took place in Zug at 10:00.

We dancers had a nice talk back with the school children and after that, we all spread around the city because we had a seven hours break before our second warming up for the evening show that would start at 20:00.
So everyone decided to make their own lives, some of us used our stage materasses from Double/Single, the piece by William Forsythe which we are doing in the Swiss program, to have a SSSSSSSSSSSIESTA (even Gloria slept hahahaha) ....because of the early waking.

I was quite awake the intire day so I decided I did not need a nap, and I went to enjoy a bit of the sunshine that we had today (after three days of fully rain). So me, Joan, Nicole and Gloria went for a nice buffet lunch outside with the view on the lake and watched the cages with beatiful birds that they have by the lake. Everyone was ready for a nap when I decided to continue my walking around the city when suddenly I met the Dutcheeeesss (Merel and Karin) of course in Starbucks, so we decided to make the last shopping before the evening show.

Our show started, all our energy got together to make up a reallly good show before our free day tomorrow in Zurich. After the show we had a talk back for the first time with adults audience, and not as usually with children, and was really surprising and inspiring how we could share things that usually with children does not happen. Now we are on our way to Zurich and we will celebrate the end of this week with a nice drink at the hotel all together.

Hello everyone!

Sidi Larbi´s new creation "Babel", left some of us speechless. It was a marvelous performance, which we visited last night! Indeed an experience and a must see. It was Yesterday after a hole free day in Basel that me, Nicole, Karin, Merel and Glen went to Zurich buy car to see it. In company with a random CD of Spice Girls! It was definitely a great end of the day and besides, Karin is a very good driver! Right Glenn!? After the performance we gave our greetings to James O´Hara, who taught us "In Memoriam" for the 2nd program "Bonte Bende". It was lovely to see him again and this time as a performer.

I have to say that I do not really remember the returning back to the Hotel in Basel. The sleepy feeling took us away for the hole time. Only Karin and Merel stood awake and they kept their eyes on the road! THANK YOU GIRLS, we arrived safely! Today Roel arrived in Basel and still on time to wish us toi toi toi for the early 10:00 am performance. It was a great performance where we were clapped by an exciting and sweet young audience! At 13.15 we got our selves on the bus heading to Zug City. The Hotel here in Zug is great! Nice big room areas, sauna and a pool! Only shame that we do not have free internet again. That is why we all came once again to Starbucks for 30 minutes of “free” internet and a Caramel Machiatto.

The weather here is still the same...humid, grey and raining here and there. At this moment I'm preparing myself to go to the theatre for a small rehearsal and spacing. Tonight we'll finish the day at the nice pool and sauna section, room service and bed. Tomorrow morning another school performance awaits us.

Maak kans op twee vrijkaarten!

De dansers en crew van Introdans zijn begin deze week teruggekeerd uit Zuid-Afrika. De serie van vier voorstellingen in Kaapstad is door publiek en pers enthousiast ontvangen. Lees hier een van de recensies. De dansers en crew van Introdans Ensemble voor de Jeugd vervolgden hun tournee door Zwitserland: van Luzern, Vevey, Bern en Basel reisden zij naar Zug. Volgende week eindigt hun tournee in Zurich. Daarna vervolgen beide dansersensembles in Nederland en Belgie de tournees van HOLLAND AMERIKA LIJN en BONTE BENDE. Tot slot sluiten zij tijdens END OF SEASON gezamenlijk het dansseizoen 2009/10 af.

Today: a FREE DAY for us, dancers! Yupie!
After the hard day of work we had in Bern, we deserved to have some time for us. We woke up in our little hotel and discovered a grey day outside....


So some of us feel really lazy and go back to their rooms for an "after breakfast nap", while some others decide to get some fresh air on the streets of Basel. Shopping looks like a really good option, even though Swiss prices are way too high! We join the same friends as yesterday to go for a lunch in the city and let our tired legs have a rest in this cosy coffee place, where we could spend hours and hours chatting and laughing :-)
Around 5pm we go back to the hotel to get ourselves ready for the next plan: we are going to watch Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui's performance in Zurich. It is about an hour trip but it is worth it to see this great company on stage; even more because we have been dancing one of his pieces, In Memoriam, in BONTE BENDE, our current program in The Netherlands.
After the beautiful and exciting evening, the train brings us back to our hotel in Basel and we try to go early to bed (always a hard thing to do for us!!).
Tomorrow our obligations will call us again: a performance for schools.

I think today we had one of the hardest days until now in this Swiss tour!

We all woke up at 06:30 in the morning to get ready for our first school show of today in Bern! After the show we had a fabulous and enthusiastic audience of 450 kids who helped us to carry on with the second show at 14:00 in the afternoon. We had talk backs after both shows; after the applause we stayed on stage and we all introduced ourselves by telling our name, age and country. After that, the kids were allowed to ask questions. An interesting question was: how does life feels like as a dancer in a modern ballet company where all dancers come together from different countries to dance?


They also wanted to now how often we tour and how you pass an audition at Introdans. That moment is always special to me, because I realise what a privilege it is to dance with Introdans.
Both performances went really well, but for me the first one, personally, was better. It is amazing to perform for such an enthusiastic audience, can you imagine: two times 450 kids (age 6 up to 14) clapping their hands off!
To finish the day, after one and a half hour bus-trip from Bern to Basel we went out for an amazing dinner with our friends from The Basler Ballett and some ex -Introdans dancers. Tomorrow, we have the day off and I am very looking forward to that.

Schedule day 5 | All: transfer from Vevey to Bern | Technicians: set up | Dancers: class and rehearsal

This morning, after breakfast, we made our way from Vevey to the capital of Switzerland, Bern.
It was a one hour and 15 minutes bus journey, and I am sorry to tell you that I can not describe the landscape, because I was sleeping! That is what often happens with us dancers. We are constantly traveling by bus from city to city, so we all have our books and music, but after a few minutes of reading or listening we all fall asleep! I guess dancing is more tiring than it looks!

But sometimes, a few of us remain awake and today was Glenn’s turn to not sleep! I think too many Starbucks’ coffees do that to you. From the picture you can see he was a bit hyper! We arrived in Bern just before midday and we had a few hours to walk around and see the beautiful city. Around 5 o’clock we headed to the theatre for a class and rehearsal of the second cast that will be performing tomorrow. That includes me performing Ella, a solo by Robert Battle that is an actual killer! It is incredible how much you can sweat in a 5min solo!
Tomorrow we have two shows for school children and the first one is really early (10h00), so for this reason, after rehearsals, we came back to the hotel for dinner and for an early night!

Schedule day 4 | Masterclass with students 'Just Dance' by Iris Reyes | Dancers: meet & greet students + class | All: performance Théâtre de Vevey | Evert Burggrave: talk back with the audience

Today we woke up under heavy clouds, but Vevey is beautiful anyway with its lake and mountains. Before the performance we met some student dancers from the Swiss dance organization, 'Just Dance'. During the day they had a workshop with Iris, our ballet master, and during the afternoon they followed us and our routines before a show. The talking was really pleasant and we also asked them questions such as “why do you like dancing?” Some of the answers were inspiring: “dance is different from other physical activities, it combines different arts together and I can loose myself in it!” “Dance is dreaming with your legs!” It was really nice to have this talk, also to remind us why we love to dance; because when you start the professional life as a dancer you start to see all the different aspects of your job and you sometimes forget the essence of it.

After the talk we prepared ourselves for the performance. We had 400 people in the audience, and they were really enthusiastic. I have to say there is a difference with the applause in Holland: there we often get a standing ovation, but here in Switzerland we get a long applause which ends into synchronic clapping: such a strong reaction and which so touching (some of us had to cry ;-).
The director of the theatre invited us for a drink after the show and he asked us to sign his guest book (see picture), like he did in 2006 and 2008 too. The day finished with a beautiful sunset, clear sky and the thought in my head that dance is a lot of work, but I have such a great time with the family we built between the dancers.

Schedule day 6 | Company: 1/2 day off | Dancers: class and corrections | All: performance, the last show of SP!R!T in Cape Town

Na zes dagen in Kaapstad te hebben gespendeerd voelen wij ons hier bijna thuis. Onze bed & breakfast lijkt een klein dorpje waar iedereen een eigen huisje heeft, de supermarkt weten we met onze ogen dicht te vinden & moeiteloos onderhandelen we met de taxichauffeur over de prijs. Vandaag is alweer onze laatste voorstelling in het Baxter Theatre. Fysiek is iedereen wel aan een hersteldag toe, maar na vier keer elke avond honderd procent te hebben gegeven voelen we ons voldaan, dat heeft zeker te maken met het feit dat we hier een fantastisch programma hebben mogen neerzetten. Het publiek was af en toe zo stil, dat het leek alsof er niemand in de zaal zat, terwijl er bij de buigingen gejoel van alle kanten kwam.

Voor mijzelf was deze week een toppunt van genot. Mijn reunie met Kaapstad na drie jaar was bijzonder fijn. Zuid-Afrika heeft mij nooit getrokken totdat ik mijn eerste stap hier aan land zette! Het is wonderbaarlijk hoe groen de oceaan is, de lucht blauwer lijkt te zijn dan in nederland & het zand langs de kust aanvoelt als zijde. Daarnaast is er het eten, de cultuur, de mensen, de geschiedenis van het land. Je zou je afvragen waar de inwoners van deze prachtige stad op vakantie gaan?
Morgen is de laatste dag in Kaapstad, een vrije dag! Even niet meer denken aan ons lichaam, onze energie en conditie, maar volop genieten. Waar ik bij mijn eerste bezoek aan dit land de meeste toeristische plekken heb bezocht; Tafelberg, Boulders beach en Waterfront, heb ik nu kunnen genieten van de plekken waar de 'locals' komen, door de aanwezigheid van mijn collega Laura Cameron, die hier jaren in Kaapstad gewoond heeft.

Ook was het bezoek aan Robben eiland, waar dit keer wel genoeg tijd voor was, erg indrukwekkend. Iedereen lijkt het eiland te verlaten met de gedachten nog bij de gevangeniscel van Nelson Mandela, totdat we vanaf de catamaran aan de horizon de zonsondergang opmerken: de twintig minuten die de vaart duurt zijn te kort om alle verschillende kleuren rood en oranje te waarnemen. Er is een hoop bezichtigen hier in Kaapstad, maar je kan absoluut niet terug naar Nederland zonder hier de 'Sunset' gezien te hebben!

Just Dance! in Vevey

Just Dance! is een onderdeel van Danse Suisse, een nationale organisatie die dans en ballet promoot d.m.v. cursussen, workshops, masterclasses en het bezoeken van voorstellingen. 12 leden van Just Dance! zijn vandaag te gast bij Introdans Ensemble voor de Jeugd in Vevey. 's Ochtends volgen ze een master class van balletmeester Iris Reyes. 's Middags bezoeken ze het theater voor een meet and greet met de Introdansers en kijken ze bij de warming up en de spacing. En natuurlijk volgt daarna een bezoek aan de voorstelling SPECIALSTEPS.

Schedule day 3 | Crew: travel from Luzern to Vevey

Three days into our Switzerland tour and everything seems to be going smoothly. Our first performance in Luzern was a succes, with a rapturous applause from what seemed to be a very satisfied audience. Next stop ‘Vevey’

A nice and early start to the day as we make our way from the beautiful city of Luzern to the French speaking city of Vevey! Breakfast has finished, time to load the bus with our cases and ‘voila’ ready for our two-hour bus journey. We settle nicely on in our seats, ipods, computers, iphones, mp3 players and last but not least BOOKS are ready for our trip. The first hour of our journey was very mellow, all a little sleepy from our night out on the town with friends from the local company of Luzern. All, except Evert (our marketing manager) who seemed to be overwhelmed with the espresso machine on board of our bus, by offering his services though out the trip, which kept the technicians and Iris (our ballet master) very amused: thanks Rinaldo (one of our technicians) and Evert!



As we go farther into our trip we suddenly slowly come alive, conversations flowing, laughing and joking, yep we’re all awake. Time for a quick pee stop, then shortly we arrive in Vevey: the home to the amazingly talented Charlie Chaplin. Unfortunately the weather has decided not to be our friend today, which is such a shame as we’re unable to see the beautiful and astonishing mountains that surround the lake that I remember from our previous tour of Switzerland. Oh well not to worry, a visit to the local shopping centre, a little bite to eat and then back to the hotel for a quick snooze before we all (dancers, technicians, costume lady, tour hostess, marketing manager and ballet master) meet for a traditional famous cheese fondue meal. The end of the evening was perfect: stomachs full and then time to retire back to the hotel to chat to our loved ones through the wonderful life saving and lets not forget money saving world of Skype. Everyone looking forward to what tomorrows performance will bring.

Interactie tijdens BEAexpo in Bern

Nederland is gastland tijdens de BEAexpo in Bern. Vanwege de Zwitserse tournee van Introdans Ensemble voor de Jeugd is een deelname van Introdans Interactie op deze beurs vanzelfsprekend. Op zaterdag en zondag verzorgen Patricia van Deutekom en Minne van Loon (docenten Introdans Interactie) in het Holland paviljoen een aantal workshops. De deelnemers doen enthousiast mee en leren in korte tijd de Battle Break, Van Manen Move, Rocha Roll en Wiggers Walk. En wederom wordt duidelijk: Introdans maakt dans aantrekkelijk voor jong en oud!

Tonight was our first show in beautiful Luzern. We spent the morning walking around the city center and enjoying the views of the water and mountains. After lunch, we went to the theater to do class. We worked in the foyer of the theater over looking the view of the lake with the sun shining in. Luckily the weather has still been kind to us. After our evening warm up we got ready for the show. All of the nerves and excitement finally started to hit us. We had a very enthusiastic audience which really gave us the energy to put on a good first show. Now we are treating ourselves to a nice dinner all together at the hotel before travelling to Vevey in the morning. It is my first time in Switzerland and now I can see why it is one of everyones favourite tours.

Schedule day 5 | Crew: 1/2 day off | Dancers: make up, class and corrections | All: Performance
Vandaag belooft het weer een mooi dag te worden en we hoeven we pas om 17.00 uur in het Baxter Theatre te zijn, dus een ideale dag om te genieten van Kaapstad. Mirjana en ik besluiten wat cadeautjes te kopen voor familie en vrienden thuis en een museum te bezoeken. We nemen deze keer geen taxi maar stappen in een minibus, die claxonerend en met een man uit het raam die al fluitend en schreeuwend meer mensen in het busje probeert te krijgen, naar het centrum rijdt. We onderhandelen een hele poos over prijzen op de Greenmarket Square, een door bomen schaduwrijk plein waar in stalletjes allerlei souvenirs worden verkocht. Hierna wandelen we door de prachtig aangelegde Company Gardens, een stadspark waar we de exotische planten bekijken en tamme eekhoorns wat nootjes voeren. Het is intussen zo laat geworden dat we het museumbezoek voor een andere dag bewaren.

Vanavond is er een grote groep dansstudenten van de University of Cape Town in het publiek, dat nog enthousiaster reageert dan bij de voorstelling gisteravond. Dit geeft de dansers een enorme energyboost! Na afloop van de voorstelling is er een nabespreking met de studenten, die een heleboel vragen voor ons hebben. Zij komen na afloop ook het toneel op en we maken een groepsfoto met iedereen samen. We praten nog wat met hen, het is heel inspirerend om over hun leven te horen en hoe zij met dans bezig zijn. Blij dat de voorstelling hen heeft geraakt verlaat ik het theater met de andere dansers, voldaan over onze missie, de Introdansmissie.

Hello everyone, I have the pleasure to start this Swissblog. On Thursday we arrived in Lucern and the sun gave us a very warm welcome. We walked around the pretty city and had a little bite alongside the river. (The photo of Karin, Gloria, Matteo, me and Nicole was taken in front of the famous wooden bridge.) During the evening we went to watch a performance of Lucern Dance Theater, which we enjoyed so much! We know a lot of dancers working here: as you see, dance world is so small, hahahhaah! We had a happy end of the day with a dinner all together, dancers of both companies enjoying "deze zwoele avond". Curious to see what the next day will bring us ;-)

Zwitsers landschap glijdt voorbij

Introdans Ensemble voor de Jeugd is voor de vierde keer te gast op STEPS, het internationale dansfestival van Zwitserland. Het ensemble kwam donderdagmiddag aan op het vliegveld van Zuerich en reisde vervolgens per touringcar naar het zonnige en prachtige Luzern. Vrijdagochtend is de technische crew begonnen met de technische voorbereidingen en 's avonds is de eerste voorstelling van het programma SPECIALSTEPS. Na Luzern vervolgt het gezelschap zijn weg naar Vevey, Bern, Basel, Zuerich en Zug.

Chauffeur Jan arriveerde donderdagmiddag in Luzern met decor, kostuums, geluid en licht. De technici zijn vanaf vrijdagochtend druk in de weer geweest met het toneelklaar maken van de voorstelling...

Schedule day 4 | Dancers: class and corrections by Robyn Ross + Performance | Ton Wiggers: Master class in University of Cape Town

Vandaag ben ik de dag iets later begonnen dan normaal want iets langer slapen na onze "première" gisteravond was nodig! De voorstelling is heel goed gegaan. Het publiek was erg enthousiast en het applaus aan het einde van de voorstelling was dan ook zo goed dat het me veel energie geeft om vanavond weer op toneel te staan. Buiten het feit dat we hier zijn om te werken, hebben we ook de tijd om de stad te verkennen. Tot nu toe is het ook erg mooi weer geweest dus daar geniet ik volop van! Dinsdag ben ik met een paar collega's met de auto langs de kust gereden en dat was zo ongelooflijk mooi! Ook ben ik naar robbeneiland geweest wat veel indruk op mij heeft gemaakt. Verder is het gewoon genieten van de mensen, het weer, het dansen in Baxter Theatre en de energie die de stad uitstraalt. Jammer om weer naar huis te gaan zondag maar stiekem hoop ik over 2 jaar weer terug te komen.

Schedule day 3 | Dancers : Class by Robyn Ross + Run "Special SP!R!T" programme in costume. Press will attend | 1st performance

After three amazing days of traveling, rehearsing, visiting family and friends and exploring the coastline, today we had to really get back into work mode. We started the day with class and a run of the programme for press and for us to adapt to all the light and background changes. It is always good to help you find your balance, get back into really moving and get used the stage. I am writing this before returning to the theatre for our opening night performance and hoping that everything tonight will go well! As a native South-African, I'm very excited and nervous about performing for people who know me. Some people are flying up from Johannesburg especially to see me dance! My favourite piece of the SP!R!T programme is definitely ‘Bardo'. I love the raw energy and earthiness of the movement and although it can be quite tiring, the music and the group energy spur you on throughout. The movement feels natural to me and I love the costumes and lighting.

It has been such a wonderful time so far and we are hoping to give back something special to our South African audience!

How much a day can mean...

Another sunrise christens the city; Paradise. We started the day going to the city center. Being surrounded by South African art, food, and culture, the local markets' welcomed us with open arms. The markets' lives were thriving with a labyrinth of African Culture. If there's one thing that should not be missed, its the feelings and emotions that the South African youth stirred within us, through their ability to hang onto their traditional culture and dances, despite the many trials and tribulations brought upon them. Their charm, charisma, and the smiles on their faces conquered our hearts. Such an experience can only be seen with your own eyes.

In the afternoon we started our first rehearsals. First we had our daily class led by repetitor Robyn Ross. We did our regular warming-up and practiced our techniques. Afterwards, we spend one hour of "spacing" the SP!R!T programme in the Baxter Theatre. During this hour we run the program and calculate the space we have on stage. Each theatre has different dimensions, so in order to perform well we need to do this. Also, our technical crew fine-tunes their light- and soundsettings.

Tomorrow, the first official performances will take place. We are really looking forward to it.

Well, finally after eleven hours of flying yesterday we made it to the bed&breakfast where we will stay during this tour in South-Africa

In my first day in Capetown, I woke up at 5.30h as I planned to go to the Aquila Safari with some others dancers. We got picked up at the hotel at 05.45hrs in the morning and we drove for two hours before we could get to the safari (as you can see was not very close). Once we got there we had a drink and a buffet breakfast. Later, finaly we would start the safari. It was great!!! We were in a jeep so close to all kind of wild animals that it was unbelievable. We saw giraffes, rhinos, buffalos, lions, cheatahs, leopards, crocodiles, ostrichs and a lot more to write them all down.

The safari last for 3 hours, and at the end we had lunch there, before we relax a bit in the sun next to a pool. Finally, at 14.00hrs we got pick up again, and went back to Capetown.
As you can see touring with introdans is great!!! Tomorrow we will start rehearsing and working. But someone else will explain you that, tomorrow.

Valse start tournee SA door inbraak

Zaterdagnacht is er ingebroken in de studio's van Introdans in Arnhem. Het gezelschap ontdekte de inbraak kort voor het vertrek naar Zuid-Afrika. Van de bagage die klaarstond zijn een techniekkoffer en drie (van de in totaal negentien) kostuumkoffers verdwenen. Deze zaken zijn essentieel voor de voorstellingen in Kaapstad. De crew is volgens schema vanaf Schiphol vertrokken en zal bij aankomst in Kaapstad met de nodige hand- en spandiensten oplossingen zoeken om de eerste voorstelling (woensdag a.s.) te kunnen uitvoeren.

On Saturday night there was a break in at the Introdans studio’s in Arnhem. The company discovered the break in shortly before their departure to South Africa. Three (of the nineteen total) costume suitcases and a trunk with technical gear have disappeared. The items are essential to the performances in Cape Town. The crew left Schiphol Airport according to schedule and will get to work finding solutions so that they can hold the first performance (coming Wednesday) upon arrival in Cape Town.

Workshop Interactions SA-NL

With the benefit of the programme of Interactions SA-NL, Ton Wiggers (co-founder and general director of Introdans)will host a workshop. During a 90 minutes master class Ton Wiggers will demonstrate the Introdans style and will guide dancers to a modern dance idiom with the classical ballet technique as a starting point.

The company, directed by Roel Voorinholt, presents SP!R!T, a programme in which four great choreographers from four different continents give shape to energy and spirit. In Psalm by José Limón, (the American master choreographer and one of the founding fathers of modern dance), the audience is treated to true dance architecture. The mystical Bardo by the Japanese choreographer Toru Shimazaki is a ballet about life after death: a compelling work full of passion and dynamism. The company, under Roel Voorintholt’s Artistic Directorship, was founded in 1971 by Hans Focking and Ton Wiggers. Their Patron is H.R.H. Princess Margriet of The Netherlands. The company travels widely, both locally and internationally. It attracts a broad audience worldwide, with various world-renowned choreographers regularly creating ballets that uniquely combine both classical elements and modern techniques. The impressive Introdans repertoire also contains works by Hans van Manen, William Forsythe, Jirí Kylián, Paul Lightfoot & Sol León, Mats Ek and Inbal Pinto amongst others.
